Welcome Address
After very successfully holding the first International Security
Printers’ Conference in a Nordic country in May 2009 in Stockholm,
Sweden, the INTERGRAF Planning Committee has decided to return to
Southern Europe for the next conference. The XXIVth International
Security Printers’ Conference and Exhibition will be held in
Spain. Spain has been one of the most important actors on the European
and indeed the world stage for almost a thousand years, in the cultural
and political as well as the economic sphere. Very recently it has been
one of the fastest growing European economies and although it has been
hit quite hard by the current economic down-turn, it is certain to
re-emerge as one of the leading European countries. Due to its historic
ties to Central and South America it also wields considerable influence
in the whole of the western hemisphere.
It is against this background that I have great pleasure to invite
you all on behalf of the INTERGRAF Planning Committee to join us in Barcelona,
for the XXIVth International Security Printers’ Conference and
Exhibition in October, 2010. When selecting a venue, the INTERGRAF Planning
Committee has to take into account that the conference now attracts
close to a thousand participants, which need a sufficiently large
conference and exhibition centre, an international airport in reasonable
proximity and good hotels. In all of these, Barcelona completely
satisfied the Committee. The city selected should also be interesting,
from a cultural, historical and perhaps even culinary point of view, and
here too, Barcelona meets all requirements in abundance. In some
respects, Barcelona is a strikingly modern city, with some of the most
inventive architecture found in Europe. In other respects, it is a great
example of a medieval town surviving brilliantly in the 21st century
– and of course there are innumerable witnesses to the artistic
and cultural flowering the city experienced at the turn and in the first
quarter of the last century. The names of Antoni Gaudí, Joan
Miró and Picasso – although by birth an Andalusian –
evoke this period. Of course, the location is important, but more
important still is the content of the conference. The Planning Committee
has put together a programme that reflects the current, and we hope,
some of the future concerns of the security printing community, both in
the banknote and the ID arenas. Expert speakers will discuss what the
industry needs to do to incorporate the latest technical advances and to
stay ahead of the forger and counterfeiter. And the exhibitors will show
how the needs of the industry have been translated into reality.
You can be assured of a full, interesting and enriching programme,
which will meet the highest expectations of all who will attend the
XXIVth International Security Printers’ Conference and Exhibition.
I look forward to welcoming you in Barcelona,
Efthimios Matsoukis
Chairman of the INTERGRAF Security
Printers’ Section
