Printing and the environment
|

|
This document was published in 1999, to provide guidance to both
printers and enforcement authorities on the practical interpretation of
"Best Available Techniques" or BAT, for dealing with the environment in
the printing industry.
The project was initiated because it was felt that guidance was
needed on how the industry should be tackling the environment. By
providing a document to which printers, suppliers and enforcement
agencies throughout Europe could work, consistency would be greatly
increased, and
|
printing firms would be less likely to spend considerable sums of
money on abatement and other process methods which were later found to
be unsuitable or not required.
This BAT document is a practical interpretation of the Integrated
Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive, which is a legal
requirement in the European Union for firms with certain processes, and
which exceed specific size thresholds.
Best Available Techniques recommend what should be achievable for the
good of the environment in each area, considering the costs.
