New ISO standard gives Intergraf’s work international recognition

Intergraf welcomes the new ISO 16759 standard on the quantification and communication for calculating the carbon footprint of print media products.

The standard will provide a common framework at international level for calculating the carbon footprint of print media products. It is not a carbon calculator but rather, a set of requirements for carbon calculators.

Intergraf actively participated in the development of the international standard by building on the work of Intergraf members on recommendations defining parameters for carbon footprint calculation of a printing site or printed product (http://intergraf.eu/images/INTERGRAF_recommendations_version2_2013.pdf).

Intergraf recommendations identify 13 basic parameters which cover 95% of typical CO2 emissions related to printing. Intergraf recommendations are stricter than the current ISO standard as they define the most important parameters as well as the boundaries to take into account when calculating the CO2 footprint.

Based on Intergraf recommendations, two application tools have been developed in the form of CO2 calculators by Intergraf members: ClimateCalc and Climate Initiative. Both tools are calculators developed by the printing industry for the printing industry.

Intergraf recommendations are provided as an example for the quantification of the carbon footprint in the new ISO 16759.

Intergraf is proud of the international recognition of its work. Intergraf Secretary General, Beatrice Klose, says, “The new ISO 16759, as the Intergraf recommendations, will help printers to quantify and communicate on their carbon footprint credentials and their efforts to improve their environmental performance.”
