PPWR

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) regulates packaging from the design phase to its end of life. It will be applicable as of 12 August 2026.

It impacts European printers in two distinct ways. First, PPWR provides obligations to packaging printers that supply printed packaging to customers. Second, all printers are themselves users of packaging in their day-to-day operations, for example through sales packaging, transport packaging, e-commerce packaging, or packaging used for the distribution of printed products. As a result, printers may be subject to different PPWR obligations, including both in relation to the packaging they supply and the packaging they use in the course of their own business activities.

PPWR also impacts non-EU printers both when supplying packaging to EU customers but also when placing packaged printed products on the EU market.

Understanding the role a printer plays in each context is therefore essential to determine the applicable compliance requirements and responsibilities.
